Our Premier Album of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Secures the Premier Spot.

On the surface, this work may look closer to an arduous university challenge rather than a new pop record from a musician who just had a previous single was a collaboration with an international pop star. Broken into 4 different parts and voiced in 13 languages, it is a dizzying classical-tinged album that delves into female mystery, religious transcendence, and physical transformation, frequently by way of the lens of various saintly figures. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot skyward on this record, supported by the constant sound of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from an award-winning songwriter within an extensive list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity alone renders the work of other artists look quite laughable.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

That this album succeeds in transcend overly academic posturing feels nothing short of miraculous, and sole credit belonging to Rosalía. Although it's not her first project to blend the past and modern styles, the scale feel far higher on Lux, and the tightrope walk far more dramatic. What really elevates her fourth release, outside of its complex melodies, rich compositions, and inherent drama, proves to be a core spirit of playfulness. Similar to the legendary artist during her peak, you find a captivating quality to the vocalist's singing which sweeps the listener up in its whirlwind. Even when she is tearing your heart in two, you nevertheless desire to be right there through the journey.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

That playful spirit shines brightly on a stunning piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy over several minutes. Then, all the music drops away, to reveal there's a spontaneous laugh and a declaration prior to a comically exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes in with cartoonish force. The track then shifts to the frenetic track featuring galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise role from none other than herself.

"The magic with Lux is that the listener rarely exactly know—nor wish to know—what it is going next."

Nearly each track concludes at a completely distinct place from where it started. A track examines the transient trappings of celebrity with a featherlight orchestration only to disintegrating into digital cacophony. Another, a song echoing the artist's previous rhythmic style begins off moody and brooding, featuring prowling beats, before sudden traditional handclaps and a heavenly choir arrive to soften its rough edges.

The Bridge Between Art & Pop

Another crucial balancing act of the album is straddling the gap of radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. It is no surprise that the album has become her first release to crack the Top 5 of major markets: its heart contains a collection of utterly catchy pop songs. A song performed primarily in English swells on a chorus that feels to gather increasingly infectious hooks while it spirals upward. That trick is repeated by a different expansive track that expands and constricts, weaving layered tunes like an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused number seduces via its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with cultural impact of other heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- partner labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals have a sharp smile, like a fairy-tale character hiding a blade: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux represents pop on a grand scale, a hungry reach for high artistry in an era of looming AI-generated sameness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of glorious transcendence, crafting a dramatic spectacle that masterfully manages its inherent excess. This is an abundant well of buried treasure that takes time to fully mine but never feels like hard work. Where some big releases of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, Lux offers a sumptuous banquet where the guests at it, some intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter between discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared gossip about useless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from pop's most endlessly creative visionary.
