New research suggests that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Users purchasing these drugs need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
People who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become starving," recalled an individual.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
