Weather Balloons Used to Illegally Transport Cigarettes Forced Closure of Airport in Lithuania

Recovered contraband balloons
No fewer than 11 of the meteorological balloons, containing thousands of packs of illegal cigarettes, have been collected so far

Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them entered the country's airspace.

Aviation Problems

The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.

Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.

Contraband Recovery

At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.

International Illegal Trade

Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.

Neighboring Country Impact

At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.

Illegal Transport Methods

When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Security Service Goals

Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."

International Concerns

These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.

Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
